BadBIOS Virus: Real or Misinterpreted?

November 13, 2013  Malware News

A mysterious piece of malware is causing much speculation about how it has reportedly taken over a security researcher’s computers. Known as the BadBIOS, this virus allegedly infected Canadian security consultant Dragos Ruiu’s computers, updating its firmware on its own and then deleting files and changing system settings autonomously. Affecting the low-level system firmware, including the BIOS, UEFI and EFI, and the high-level operations in the operating system, BadBIOS also is reported to cross multiple platforms (OS X®, Windows®, OpenBSD) and can communicate between infected machines even if they are not networked. Researchers outside Ruiu’s lab have been unable to reproduce the malware’s behavior, and are now examining actual machines believed to be infected.
