Apache® Malware Targeting Popular Websites, Apple® and Microsoft® Users

May 21, 2013  Malware News

Popular websites are unknowingly hosting a backdoor variant that drives traffic to malicious websites. Known as Linux/Cdorked.A, this trojan has infected more than 400 Apache® web servers, including 50 of the most popularly ranked websites by Alexa®. According to the ESET® blog We Live Security, many of the trojan’s redirects specifically target Apple® iPad® and Apple® iPhone® users or those using Internet Explorer® or Firefox® on Microsoft® Windows XP®, Windows Vista® or Windows® 7. Individuals with IP addresses in a blacklisted range or with an Internet browser’s language set to Finnish, Russian, Japanese, Kazakh, Ukrainian or Belarusian, are spared from the malicious content. Security experts are still unclear exactly how Linux/Cdorked.A was deployed or who is behind this malware campaign.
