Industrial computers all over the world were attacked by the Stunex worm virus. This virus is described by experts as being groundbreaking in cyber crime. Although systems in the USA, Austria, Malaysia and Denmark were under attack as well, the largest percentage of attacks, approximately 60%, were reported in Iran. Experts agree that the target was Iran’s nuclear program. Iran officially declared that the Stuxnet virus infected more that 30 000 computers in their region. Stunex mainly attacks industrial control systems, known as SCADA, and is dangerous mainly because it does not need any actions to be taken by the user and does not even need to be connected to the internet. Analyses show that Stunex was created to expose weak points and take control over or destroy the infected industrial systems. The system itself and the Stunex code are very sophisticated which means that its creation is backed by or involves a group with a strong financial and professional background.
