Win32/Stuxnet

July 29, 2010, Malware News

Security experts are warning of a new worm attack, known as Win32/Stuxnet. This worm spreads due to a newly discovered Zero Day type weakness in the Windows shell. Its main objective is to attack SCADA systems which are the control and monitoring systems used primarily in the industrial energy sector. The largest percentage of infected computers is in the USA and Iran. Experts agree that this follows a classic pattern of industrial espionage. This means that the virus is not meant to be a threat to the average user. However, the greater danger lies in the vulnerability that has been exposed, which will certainly be used by other malware families in the future.
