Anonymity Network Exploited for Criminal Activity

August 07, 2013  Malware News

An open network that protects online users from network surveillance is believed to have been used by a hidden services hosting provider to distribute graphic and violent child pornography. The anonymity network conceals a user's location or usage making it difficult to track Internet activity. IP addresses are kept from policed traffic analysis through a system known as “onion routing” which encrypts identifying information. In this case, the anonymity network warned the provider to remove the illegal material and eventually had to disable its servers. Despite this, the provider continued resurfacing, switching to backup servers. In the end, an Irish national was arrested and may face extradition to the U.S.
